My Italian stinks, but I think this is the way you say “beautiful baby girl”… and is she ever? I posted a sneak peek of her a few weeks ago… and here’s some more! She’s getting ready to welcome a baby brother. If they only lived a little closer, I’m sure we’d see him on the blog in a couple weeks. Good luck guys!

Bugs + Sun = Shoot and Run!

Despite the bugs and sun, we were able to snag some gorgeous photos from this session. This historical site in Leesburg, Virginia has just changed policies on photography… so unfortunately I probably won’t be able to go back for sessions very often which is really too bad because it is beautiful!

Love his little scrunchy nose!

I normally wouldn’t include a photo of the breakdown… but the last one was just too cute. If only we all looked that cute when we cried!

And just when he thought he was done… I snap this one in the parking lot before he got into his car. It happens to be one of my favorites from the session!

I have seen very few babies that were as thrilled as this little guy to get his photo taken! Maybe it was the magical 9 month blissful age– not yet walking, amazed by everything new. Maybe it was the fact that we were outside for most of the session, and since it was late evening, the weather was tolerable. Maybe he is just always this happy. Whatever the reason, I’m not complaining– I LOVE IT! I’m actually a little apprehensive to put a few of the more serious images in this sneak peek– since he was so smiley during most of the evening. Mom and Dad– you are so lucky to have such an easy going child! Hope you enjoy!

It feels like summer in Historic Leesburg!

We picked 8:00 am to avoid the heat. Little did we know, the humidity and heat were waiting for us! It was bound to happen and Memorial Day weekend was the perfect time for summer to find us. The pool is open and school is almost out, the flowers and trees are bursting with beauty! So it is only appropriate to show a quick peek from a session with a beautiful little lady!

Not quite a newborn, what can I expect?

Sometimes I get phone calls from parents who want to schedule a session with their new baby, but the baby is older than a couple weeks old. I consider a session to be a true newborn session only if it occurs during the first two weeks of life. Why? I know there are exceptions to everything in life, but this is what I have found over the past 5 years of photographing babies. There is a brief “honeymoon” period for parents after bringing a new baby home. Sometimes it only lasts a few days, sometimes it lasts a few weeks. It is the time when you think your baby is destined to sleep its life away. The time when you wait for hours to get one glimpse of your baby’s eyes open. Surely and certainly, just when you think that you have been given the most perfectly behaved baby the world has ever offered, this period ends–sometimes it is gradual and sometimes abrupt– many times it happens on the day I arrive– LOL! When this period is over, the baby will be awake more and for longer periods, he or she will want to eat more and since he will likely be going through a rapid growth period, he will want to feed multiple times during the hour to increase mom’s milk supply. This will lead to a baby that goes to the bathroom more (which makes for a messier session, if we are going for the au natural look, with more frustration usually from Dad when he gets pooped on– it always happens to Dad). In addition, the baby doesn’t sleep through movement as easily, which makes positioning more difficult. While it is not impossible to capture the same poses, it is much more challenging and variety is compromised (meaning when the baby does fall asleep, we usually only get one pose before he/she wakes). At any rate, it is ideal to capture moments with a new baby during the two week “honeymoon” period. BUT WHAT IF WE MISS THAT WINDOW? CAN WE STILL SCHEDULE A NEWBORN SESSION? Absolutely! I just prepare parents for the session to be longer. We also must be more open to the possibility that the baby will not sleep for the photos. There are options for babies that are awake, but if mom and dad have their mind set on a particular pose, there is the possibility of disappointment. As long as we are on the same page and understand the unpredictable nature of newborn photography, I’m completely on board with the session beyond 2 weeks old.

So with all that being said, here are some photos from a 4 week old “newborn” session.

We’ve had some beautiful weather lately, which has allowed me to come out of hibernation to enjoy Historic Leesburg a bit! This little guy may just be the happiest baby I’ve ever seen! He was happy both indoors and out, even though he missed his nap! I really enjoyed our session– I hope you love these as much as I do!
