Two Tiny Hands Mini Sessions | Bristow, Virginia

A respected child photographer tells a story every year during her national speaking tour about why she does so much charity work and I can only paraphrase and sum it up in once sentence– “God gave me a gift and it is my duty to give back.” I really believe in this statement and am so honored to help the Two Tiny Hands organization raise money and awareness. What/Who is Two Tiny Hands? I’ve pulled an excerpt from the blog to share. “Two Tiny Hands is an organization providing support to families after the loss of a child. We are six moms in the Northern Virginia area (all of whom have suffered a loss of a loved one) that have come together to play an active roll in our community to help families during their time of need…” To learn more about Two Tiny Hands, you can click here to go to the blog or here to go to the facebook page.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of working with two very talented photographers, Danielle Hobbs and Andrea Hallett to photograph children for Two Tiny Hands. We offered spring mini sessions to the community with 50% of the proceeds going directly to Two Tiny Hands. Since every photographer has a unique style and working preference, I’m sure we ~~got under each others skin and~~ stepped on each others toes in some small way– BUT I had so much fun! (After posting this, I was assured that no toes were broken, and a harmonious “YOU guys did not get under my skin”… so I retract that statement!) Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the event!

Below you’ll find a few “sneak peek” highlights… including a sneaky behind the scenes shot of Andrea as she showed one of our beautiful models an image on her camera display! I know how much she loves being in front of the camera– so if this image isn’t showing tomorrow– I’ll know who hacked my blog! LOL!

Today Show Newborn Photography Segment scores big in Northern Virginia | HIP Studio

A couple weeks ago a segment aired on the Today show about newborn photographer (and colleague) Tracy Raver. If you didn’t catch it, you can view it here as she has some amazing work to share => TODAY SHOW SEGMENT. Since then newborn photographers across the country, including Northern Virginia and including myself, have been getting calls to capture newborns like Tracy does. While I can’t promise to do it exactly like Tracy, I can do it HIP Studio style! Newborn photography is an amazing art, but no two artists are exactly the same! Shortly after this segment aired, pediatricians and experts chimed in on the safety of posing newborns for the sake of getting the artistic shot. Rest assured, I will never put your newborn child in harms way during our shoot. So today it is only appropriate for me to share a newborn session with you And I even have some of big sister at the end! Enjoy!

How could I miss blogging this gorgeous little guy… the second time around? Mom contacted me for a session shortly after coming home from the hospital with her son. Oh no, my schedule was full! My newborn sessions focus on two areas: 1) small and sometimes sleepy baby and 2) relationship study of baby with mom and dad. Our problem… dad wasn’t available when I was. Time was ticking… and since getting those sleepy curled baby shots is usually only possible during the first couple of weeks, we went ahead with a session without dad. Of course rules always have exceptions and this little 12 day old guy did not have sleeping in mind! After a lot of hard work by mom and grandma, we managed to sneak some out– these were posted a couple weeks ago here. I really wanted this family to have relationship shots, so a couple weekends later, I had an opening and they took it! Now at 4 weeks old, I was not optimistic that we were going to have a sleeping baby and we were totally prepared for that. Mom followed all my instructions to a T and when they showed up at the studio, guess what? He was sleeping… and proceeded to sleep the entire time! I couldn’t believe it… I love the connection shown in these images– I can just feel the love when I look at them. I’m so happy that everything worked out!

AND BTW…. you may notice that my logo stamp has some interesting new colors… something new is coming! Stay tuned!

What a perfect evening for photos? The air was not too warm, not too cool. The light was beautiful. And the subject was stylin’ and ready to go! Still the handsome little guy I remember from last year’s session– but a year older. It was hard to pick some favorites, but here’s a few for your peek!

So my challenge got the better of me. I promise it wasn’t totally my fault… I’ve had a couple technical difficulties that have made it take twice as long to create a blog entry… but I’m back to posting and will probably have a couple posts a day for the next few days!

For this one, I have something extra special! A video–yay! I had a shoot with some super special twins that I have followed from birth until now. It has been so cool to watch them grow and change! So today, I’m going to post a couple images from our session, a couple from the previous two sessions…. and then an animoto video from the latest session. Lots of good stuff!

We SCREAM for ICE CREAM!! | Hip Studio children photography

Today HIP Studio traveled to Old Town Alexandria to catch up with a couple very sweet kiddos! Now Miss P has been my superstar this summer. She joined in for a session with her cousin, then she welcomed a baby brother, and now she’s made it back to DC to hang out with her other little brother! And rumor has it that she may have even spent some time in England. Whew, world class traveler! I must say that she is the most helpful 8 year old I’ve ever met (coming from the mother of an 8 year old). So today little brother Z put her to the test. He did not want me to take his picture. His mission was to avoid my camera. At one point when he and his dad were walking– everytime he would pass me by, he would look and shake his little finger and say “No, no!” I knew I was in trouble– but this dad did not give up– he had the great idea to go for ice cream! I knew what that meant– 2 year old + hot day + ice cream = happy + messy 2 year old! BUT it was so worth it to get genuine expressions from this little man! Dad saved the day! Yay!

So here we are before ice cream. Mr Z. is thinking of a new plan to allude Stephanie and her camera! Miss P waits patiently hoping that she’ll have the chance to turn and smile for a quick photo of the two of them.

I’ve wanted to do the 1st birthday cake shot with a child other than my own for a while and when Miss K. came in for her 1st birthday photo shoot, I knew it was the perfect opportunity! She was so cute in her little tutu…. but she didn’t care much for the cake or getting messy… oh well, I think dad enjoyed the cake! And you’ll notice a little outtake at the end of the post. I have a beautiful canvas of Miss K’s mom and dad hanging in my studio, when she saw it she decided that since they were kissing in the photo, she needed to kiss them, too. It was adorable!

These little ladies were just the sweetest most cooperative little subjects! I always find it so fascinating working with newborn twins. I usually find that the characteristics that mom and dad observe by the time we have our newborn photo session are the same ones that they talk about at our 1 year session! I love it and I love these little girls! I know mom and dad are just as crazy about their little angels!

I know I’ve said it before, but I can’t think of a better job than capturing the pure and simple innocence of a newborn child. Mr. A and his mom traveled from Richmond to meet me in Fredericksburg for our session. I have had the honor of photographing his big sister so it was super special to meet him! Mom, I hope you are enjoying him– I know you have a great helper!
