You better work, lady! | Leesburg Virginia Children’s Photographer

I do need exercise– here I am halfway through my pregnancy. So far, so good… BUT since I had gestational diabetes 11 years ago during my first pregnancy… I’ve been poked, prodded, put on a “voluntary diet” reducing carbs and sugar, scanned, weighed… and thank goodness my tests have been clean. I’m convinced that the reason I didn’t have gestational diabetes pregnancy 2 and 3 was that I was exercising more… not necessarily the going to the gym kind of exercise… the full-time job, juggling children, and trying to be the best mom ever kind of exercise! No time for TV, no time for rest… go, go, go! And this time around, I’ve tried (despite the extreme heat) to keep moving. The role of photographing children, in addition to chasing my own, certainly helps in that area! I’m really hoping that my path leads to an under 10 pound baby, and that I am able to stay “under the line” on my next test at 28 weeks! So… on to the photos and the point of my exercise comment! I do several sessions a year with friends and their children… and guess what? These are by far the hardest sessions… sometimes its because the children know me too well and think better of cooperating, sometimes I bring it on myself by trying new locations or props, and sometimes it just happens… in this case, I’m convinced that the children conspired and decided that I needed to work out! However, when I look back through the photos after proofing them, they are very rewarding because I know that I earned every single expression and pose! Thank you little Miss Spitfire and Mr. No Smile for You:)Enjoy!

Baby, oh baby! | Ashburn Virginia Newborn Twin Photography

I was anxiously anticipating photographing these little angels! Mom and I didn’t know whether they would sleep for us or not since they were almost 7 weeks old…but they slept like little troopers thanks to Andrea Hallett,  baby whisperer and twin poser extraordinaire! Working with another photographer just makes the session go so much more smoothly… makes me wish there were always 4 helping hands! I had only planned to post 3 photos, but I just couldn’t choose! Enjoy!

Holy Sunflowers, Batman! | Poolesville, MD McKee-Beshers Sunflowers

A friend told me about this sunflower field last year. I made a mental note that I’d visit this year– didn’t really plan to take the kids along, though! I thought I’d do a sunrise session….just me, the flowers, and a dozen or so other photographers waiting for the first ray of light to touch the little golden hats! Plans changed, I took the kids…the evening was chaotic. We thought we’d arrive around 6:00 take photos for an hour or so and then head out– of course, the best time to take photos was about the time we were leaving. I knew this, but hoped for clouds and good luck. The kids were miserable in the heat and complained the entire time. In hindsight, I feel bad for them– I always expect too much, as every parent probably does at some point along the way. I know it is tough being a photographer’s child and I try not to stick the camera in their face too often! The sunflowers really were amazing and I’d highly recommend a visit, just a short 30 minutes from me in Leesburg– the highlight of the journey for the kids was White’s Ferry– they thought it was pretty neat to float across the Potomac (I think it is the last one operating in the area). Anyway, if you visit the sunflowers bring plenty of water, a lot of patience, and remember the best time to go is around 7:00 pm. Next time…

Amazing Just the Way You Are | Leesburg Virginia Child Photographer

Pause. I dropped my girls off at a party at 8:00, husband is out for the evening, so the little guy and I got a few minutes to play… 15 minutes of perfect evening light and no humidity, can’t ask for much more. When it is just the two of us, he’s an amazing little model!

Anyone up for a game of speed photography? | Colvin Run Mill Family photographer

We met before 9 am. The air temperature was almost 80, but I guarantee with the humidity it felt like 90! Even with the heat, all was ok… BUT the BUGS just couldn’t stay away from us! I must have wiped a half dozen from my eyes in the hour that we were there and the little boys kept swatting at them in between and during shots! We were already nearing naptime for little brother, so we had extra incentive to move quickly!  I think we wrapped up in 40 minutes and that was definitely a record for a non mini session for me!

I rarely shoot at Colvin Run Mill, and sadly this is probably the last time I will shoot there. As we were leaving, one of the employees gave me a copy of their new photography policy which includes a minimum usage rate of $100 per session. I wish them the best of luck, but photography usage at most of the plantation homes are less than that and Meadowlark is only $20. Oh well!
